In 2008, the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) identified 14 Grand Challenges for the 21st century (NAE, 2008). The purpose of these challenges is to call society to action around the greatest human challenges and opportunities that we face today. Motivated by the NAE's vision for the future as well as by increased calls to focus engineering education around the solving of real world problems, the Grand Challenge Scholars Program highlights the educational paradigm shift necessary to enable students to contribute to this global effort. These Grand Challenges fit within four broader Grand Challenge Areas that represent many of the major engineering issues of the 21st century. The Grand Challenge Scholars Program at Olin College will create a community of students and other participants who will provide guidance and support to the Program Participants.  Further, this program will help students make new connections between their work and the Grand Challenges by requiring both interdisciplinary work and reflection. These additions to the student's experience, combined with the large scope of the Grand Challenges, will prepare students to address complex problems that do not have obvious or simple solutions.

Grand Challenge Scholars Program

In 2008, the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) identified 14 Grand Challenges for the 21st century (NAE, 2008). The purpose of these challenges is to call society to action around the greatest human challenges and opportunities that we face today. Motivated by the NAE's vision for the future, as well as by increased calls to focus engineering education around the solving of real world problems, the Grand Challenge Scholars Program highlights the educational paradigm shift necessary to enable students to contribute to this global effort. To this end the NAE Grand Challenge Scholars Program was created in order to stimulate the combined curricular and extra-curricular preparation of students to be the next generation of grand challenge solvers.

Broader Impact

At a national level, all participating schools share a common framework for implementing their own Grand Challenge Scholars Program. This framework can be used as a common language for sharing successful ideas, courses, projects, and processes between the schools. Instead of talking about successful implementations of service learning or entrepreneurship in the abstract, this framework makes clear the need for these components and gives them concrete places in the curriculum of participating universities.

The mentorship component of Olin’s program connects student participants with Olin faculty and alumni as well as professional or corporate experts. The mentors and students form a hub of ideas and passion around the Grand Challenges that positively impact the mentors in addition to the student participants. Furthermore, this experience can help mentors meet one other, share new ideas, and benefit from the youthful enthusiasm of the participating Olin students and the program in general.
